What are some good, funny books for a teen to read this summer? I read a lot and any more, most books are totally serious and depressing. My life has been a little tough right now, and depressing books are not what I feel like reading. I know, most books have conflicts that are going to be slightly sad or depressing, but if it has humor it makes it better.
Some books I've read that have conflicts while remaining hilarious:
The ttyl series by Lauren Myracle
Meg Cabot books (I've read most of her books)
Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison, as well as the other books in the series
The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty
Those are the main ones that come to mind out of all the books I've read recently that were really funny without being totally pointless. I also really liked I'd Tell You That I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter, The Ashley's series by Melissa de la Cruz, and The Clique by Lisi Harrison (which I didn't like as well as the Ashley's, but it's still an okay series). These books aren't quite as funny as the ones above, but are still ones I enjoyed.
I've read so many books that I honestly can't think of all of the books I've read that I liked, so those are just a few. If there were any books you've read that may have not been really hilarious but wasn't heart renching and depressing (keep in mind that it should probably be appropriate for a teen), then you're free to suggest it. I'm reading The Devil Wears Prada right now (suggested by my older sister), and I wouldn't say that it's a teen novel whatsoever, but it's still good.
Any suggestions will help. Thumbs up and five stars to best (obviously)!
Thanks in advance. =] | Burger Wuss by M.T. Anderson
I found it on a library shelf when I was 16 and laughed the entire time! I highly recommend it. | Did you watch New Moon? Thumbs up or Down? I have a thirteen year old niece who read the Twilight Saga books. You wanted so badly to see the movie New Moon. I have heard of the movie through TV commercials but never got a chance to see what it was rated. I went to WatchMoviesSite.com and decided to watch the bootleg version for free just so I'll know what type of sex, violence or cursing was in the movie. I also wanted to watch it to see why she was so obsessed with it. Granted I love Vampire Ware-wolf movies but after watching New Moon I do not see why this movie has so many people waiting in lines and texting all their friends. This movie was nothing special and far from spectacular.
If you haven't watch the movie yet then you are missing nothing. I personally would save the 10 bucks for a DVD rental of "Pet Cemetery". New Moon is about a young girl who wants to be a vampire so she can live forever with her Vampire boyfriend. The Boyfriend rejects her and being a hot in the pant teen as she is she decided to go after her guyhood friend who turns out to be a WareWolf. In the first movie "Twilight" the bot friend (Edward) stalked her beyond believe. Had this been real life he would have been in jail for stalking. Now in the movie New Moon there is yet again another stalker. This time it's the Guyhood friend, the Warewolf. He stalks and protects her like the vampire did in Twilight. Ohh yeah , Warewolves kills vampires to past time (geezz)
So now we have this dependent girl who cant live without a boyfriend in her life. I mean she tried to kill herself many times just so she could see him in a vision. Talk about fatal obsession! After she tried cliff diving into the ocean her Blood sucking boyfriend thought she was dead and decided to kill himself. She arrives just in time to save him. Now the new Buff wolf boyfriend is upset because he is now the jilted one.
The movie ends very strangely but still in a pretty good way to let you know there's another story coming. Like I said the movie was nothing special and giving it 2 thumbs down might be a little harsh but fitting compared to "Pet Cemetery". I suggest you watch New Moon free online first and then decide if you want to purchase the DVD or make a trip to your local theater. Let me know what you thought about New Moon. | New Moon gets two thumbs up from me.
And, I have to disagree with your "review" if you even want to call it that. Your question is more a rant than a proper question.
You first say that you want to understand, but you seem pretty decided. You admit that you illegally watched it online instead of actually going to the theater. You didn't read the books, you didn't try to understand the movie (because it wasn't tricky to follow.)
Also, you posted parts of Twilight as New Moon...wrong.
New Moon is the continuing story of a girl, who in the first movie, Twilight, finds out about the vampire world, a world where she finally finds her soul mate and true love. She is open and understanding and non-judgemental and accepts them for who they are and who they are trying to be.
In this sequel, the vampire decides that despite their love, his world is continuing to put her at risk, so he leaves. She has to learn to live without him and find herself and her friends after feeling that her world ended. (I don't agree with this part...the whole depression for months is overly stated, but it shows the loss that you think you feel when this happens.) She is thrown into another world of what she thought was myth when she discovers that her new best friend can turn into a werewolf to defend the humans from the vampires.
Pet Cemetery? Seriously? That was a joke of a movie...and anyone who read the book would have agreed...the book was miles beyond better than the film. In the case of the Twilight saga, many of the viewers are fans who have read the book, and they would still say the book is better, but the films are bringing the story that they love to the big screen. If there are elements of the story that you don't agree with, use those opportunities to talk to your niece about them and how a better response would be, but you have to remember that it's fiction.
Your words..."he would have been in jail for stalking" well...as soon as the real world has vampires protecting humans from other vampires, maybe the stalking laws will change, but to compare his behavior to that of a normal human is just silly. And in this movie, the werewolf definitely doesn't do any stalking.
Read the books with an open mind for enjoyment and fun. Watch the films without preemptively judging them negatively and maybe you'll have a little fun with your niece. | Why do people encourage teen pregnancy here? Seriously... you have so many guys having babies on here. Teen Pregnancy Rose by 3% in 2005-2006. That is a lot!

Hey, you posted on me other question, and I would just like to know what gloves you would reccomend for a beginner. I want lighter gloves that allow my hands to breath (hope that makes sense). This is why the MMA thumb free glove attracted me.
I am relatively small (mid-teen) and was wondering what gloves would suit me best.
Thanks (Others are allowed to answer aswell) | The important thing for heavy bag training is wrapping up. Hell if you are properly wrapped you don't even need gloves technically.
If you want light gloves obviously MMA gloves are a good way to go. Honestly Sporting Authority is carrying a pretty decent MMA glove now, and you can pick up a pair and some hand wraps for about 30 bucks total. Which honestly will suit you just the same.
Other people might suggest name brands in which you are dropping 30 to 50 bucks on, but honestly you are only using them for bag training, even sparring, name brand won't really have any advantages over the cheap ones. It is like Golf, you can buy cheap clubs when you are starting out and be no better or worst than someone who has a thousand dollar set.
Head up to a Sports Authority or local sports store, pick up some handwraps (many of them have instructions on the box on how to wrap up) and some cheap MMA gloves, and start rocking it.
No sense in ordering something from a website, paying 50 or 60 bucks and waiting for it to come in.
Keep in mind the "breathing" for your hands will be a little more limited with wrapping, but that will be what prevents you from spraining your wrist, or breaking bones in your hand, or getting injury to the connective tissues.
You can buy plain bag gloves, or even MMA gloves and hit a bag without wrapping up, however your gains will be limited and you won't be able to hit as hard.
So to me personally, it doesn't matter the glove per say, as long as I am wrapped up, I can wear and wail with whatever glove I put on my hand, and my hands are protected.

Q5) How many hours a day, roughly, do you listen to music? oh jeez, if it's a normal day 3, if i'm sick....6 lol | What is wrong with todays teens? Well I am 14, and I just think that how teens of these days act is ridiculous and pretty disgraceful. I mean all the rebellious behavior, disrespecting your parents, promiscuous sex, drugs, alcohol, thievery, etc. I guess all these things really bother me because I was raised in a household where most of these things are seen as taboo at certain age. People also tell me I am too mature for my age, that I am an adult trapped in a teenagers body. Now this is not to put anyone down, but it is really hard to find friends that act and think kind of the same way I do. A lot of the friends I have gained, I should say are not very "proper examples". They do some of the stuff I mentioned above, and while I don't like to judge a person based on how they choose to live, I still don't agree with it. It also seems like this stuff is totally excepted in these days. My way of living is honoring my parents, respecting God, working hard to get good grades, and staying away from things that will lead me to trouble. People like to call my lifestyle boring and it gets annoying. I'm not a boring person, I know how to have fun, I just don't want to participate and all the things teenagers like to engage in these days. I remember just yesterday I was reading a question and the user was asking about teenagers doing weed and when they first tried it. there was about 7 people that gave their experiences and talked about how often they did it, they got like 5+ thumbs up, but the people that said they don't do it and choose to stay drug free got several thumbs down. That just made me shocked. However the biggest problem is teens and sex, now i know that teens are going to do it anyways, but I mean seriously at least be safe and at least do it with someone you actually care for. I don't care too much for abstinence, but I do agree on making sure you actually care for the person, one night stands just aren't the way to go. I can honestly say that I started noticing all these behaviors when i came to America, I am originally from Italy. Of course back in Italy we have our share of rebellions, but in America it seems very wide spread. Again I am not trying to offend anyone, but I just want to know why this behavior is so promoted? | Lol, I agree with you :) I'm 16 and I don't like partying, I don't drink or smoke. People say I'm boring, but I think they should shut up, because at least I have my self-respect and dignity. I think some teens behave like that, because if their friends behave like this, they'll copy them to look cool, the media perceives it as a good thing and some teens are so stupid to follow and also it's all to do with parenting. If parents don't teach their guys self-respect, morals and how to behave properly then their guys are just going to go off the rail.
Most of my friends are 17/18 and they laugh when I tell them I'm still a virgin, but I don't why people are in such a rush to loose it so quickly, it's a precious thing and once it's gone, you can't get it back. Also, I'm the one laughing, because some of them have babies and now they're stuck looking after their baby.
I think you're really mature and it's really great :) | Will I Grow Taller? Please read my situation and feel free to give any input!? Ya Im a 17 year old guy, 5'8, 168 lbs.
Long story short, I feel too short/small.
I have short parents (mom 5'1; dad 5'7) and short grandparents, however my dad's dad is 6'3.
I really feel the need to grow taller and I'm doing all the research I can to find out ways I can achieve growing another 2 - 3 inches, before my growing time is up.
I believe I started puberty around 14; because that is when I officially got sperm, lol, but for some reason, up until recently I haven't noticed any real dramatic changes to my body/height since I was 14, other than an increase in body hair....I almost have a beard now, but its still weak, and doesn't connect everywhere yet. I also have a fair amount of stomach and chest hair but not that much...
I've read that when you are about to experience a growth spurt, your hands and feet grow first...
Well I believe that's what's happening to me now. My left foot is measured out to 10.5 inches and my right foot is measured out to 10.0 inches. I think my feet have grown; they just look bigger. Likewise with my hands; about 6 months ago, I'd measure out my hands to see how big they were, spreading them wide, measuring from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my pinky and would get 7 inches on the dot. Now, as I'm noticing the size of my hands are increasing, I measured them again today (same way as the first time) and got 8 inches right on the money.
And even with my shin bones. Although it looks like my shins/legs are getting longer, it could be due to the fact that I have lost a high amount of body fat (as I was almost obese in my early teens) after 16, creating the illusion of longer legs...
Whatever the case is, I'm still excited about this because I am finally noticing these changes about my appearance, which give me hope that I will still definitely grow taller; to at least reach the 5'10 - 5'11 mark (which is my goal)..
Also, I've been eating A LOT more than usual; for the past couple months my appetite has been going crazy. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want and seem to stay at the same weight of 165-170 lbs......growth spurt soon?....
So my question is:
Is the increase in size of my hands and feet a signal that I really am going to get bigger and grow taller?
Also, I've been taking these supplements for the past month as well:
Jamieson's Chewable Vitamin C (Up to 4 a day)
Jamieson's Omega 3-6-9 (Up to 3 a day)
Jamieson's Calcium Magnesium (Up to 3 a day)
Jamieson's Vitamin E ( 1 a day)
Jamieson's Vitamin B 75 Complex ( 1 a day)
Wampole's Liquid Vitamin D ( 1 teaspoonful a day)
Webber Natural's Cod Liver Oil ( 2 a day)
....^ While were on the subject of health, can anybody else give me some info as to how I should be taking these supplements?, beside them I listed the recommended daily intake it mentions on the label.
What are these specific supplements doing to/for my body, and are they really assisting me in my growth?
All answers are appreciated, Thanks!
CSM | | You'll grow another 1.4 inches in the following years. | A good fantasy book for me to read? I read a LOT of books, but I have a special place in my heart for fantasy. Some of my favorite authors are tamora pierce, J.K. Rowling, suzanne collins, hilari bell, christopher paolini, etc.
I like:
the inheritence cycle,
the goblin woods,
all of tamora pierce's books (they're my favorite)
the hunger games,
graceling,
eon dragoneye reborn,
poison study,
harry potter,
the gemma doyle series,
The Abhorson series by Garth Nix,
The Bartimeaus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud,
the wee free men,
the Two princesses of Bamare,
inkheart,
narnia
city of ember
etc.
Can someone recomend a book like these (and either include a description or a link to a description.) Thanks. Also, please do not copy a list of around 100 fantasy books off of a website, it is annoying and hard to read. If tempted to do so, just provide the link. I would really prefer 1-5 well thought out suggestions as opposed to a million irrelevant titles. Thanks, 10 points to whoever suggests a book that I'm really interested in.
P.S. If I've read a suggestion I'll make a note beneath this, so don't repeat other's suggestions if you know I've already read them. Thanks,
~Clarkie
DO NOT RECOMEND TWILIGHT! Do you hear me? I have read the books, and am frankly quite annoyed with the current teen obsession with such poorly written literature. Do not advise me to read them, or to read them again. I will just ignore you, or give you a thumbs down.
Thanks in advance for the help, everyone!
Note: I feel like this is helpful for everyone. I can find some new book suggestions, and others can too!
A few things you should know:
Points will go to whoever offers a book that actually interests me. I did this before, and someone recomended a book I'd never heard of and gave a great description. It's now one of my favorites. She got ten points. You should know that I read a lot, however, so it is no easy feat. Who knows though, you may have read my next favorite book and I just don't know it yet.
I'm not really into sci-fi or tweeny bop chick lit books (like clique, marked, prep, etc.) Please don't recommend anything like that.
And I have little interest in vampires. Unless it happens to be a really good story. But even then, I'm really not into vampires.
I read a few of Ann McCaffrey's (dragonsong series) and liked them, and I read a few of Ursala LeGuin's (really liked GIFTS) and his dark materials (did not like those as much).
And I've read city of ember and sequels. good books.
I've also read:
Artemis fowl (were ok, didn't love them)
Septimus Heep (didn't impress me at all)
I've read the wizard heir and dragon heir series.
Those are all the books most often suggested. Please don't suggest one you know I've already read. Thanks!
~Clarkie | Try "The Princess Bride" (the book that the movie was based on). It is QUITE delightful.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Peter Pan are fantasy classics.
And if you like "The Two Princesses of Bamarre", have you tried the other Gail Carson Levine books? (And be on the lookout for the sequels to "The Two Princesses of Bamarre" that are supposedly coming out soon! Or maybe they are already out...)
Hope I didn't repeat anything! Happy reading! |
